How the calculation works

Asphalt millings — RAP, recycled asphalt pavement, grindings, blacktop millings — are what comes off a road when a milling machine removes the old surface before resurfacing. Crushed and screened, they are sold as a driveway and lane surfacing material at a fraction of hot-mix prices, and they behave like a gravel that slowly turns back into asphalt: the residual bitumen coating every particle softens in summer heat and rebinds under traffic and rolling.

The estimate is a standard compacted-depth calculation at 2,800 lb per loose cubic yard, with a compaction allowance because millings pack down hard.

The rebinding, honestly described

Millings are not asphalt and will not become asphalt. What happens is real but partial: each particle carries old bitumen, summer heat softens it, and compaction under traffic knits the surface into something firmer and more water-shedding than any gravel. A millings drive laid in June is noticeably harder by August. Laid in November it stays loose until spring — which is the single biggest thing to know before ordering.

Where millings beat gravel

Less dust, fewer ruts, far less washout on slopes, and a dark surface that reads as a finished driveway rather than a work in progress. Where gravel needs raking and topping every year or two, a well-rolled millings drive holds its shape for several. The price is comparable to crusher run and cheaper than most decorative stone.

What it will not do

It will not give a smooth, sealed, uniform surface — the texture is coarse and the colour patchy. It cannot be sealcoated meaningfully, it softens in extreme heat, and some HOAs and municipalities do not accept it as a finished surface. For a front driveway where appearance matters, hot mix or concrete is the honest answer; for lanes, rear access, farm tracks and overflow parking, millings are hard to beat on value.

Compaction is what makes it work

Spread and left, millings are just dark gravel. Rolled with a vibratory roller — ideally on a hot day, ideally watered lightly first — they lock into a semi-bound mat. Renting a 1-ton roller for a day is the difference between a surface that lasts five years and one that scatters by the next winter.

What it costs

Millings run $10–$25 per ton in 2026, and free-to-cheap directly from paving contractors who have just milled a road nearby. Supply is seasonal and local — it exists where resurfacing is happening.

Buying direct from the paving crew

A contractor milling a road has trucks of material to move and a tipping cost to avoid. Asking the site foreman where the millings are going is how people end up with a driveway for the price of the haul. The material is unscreened and inconsistent in size, which matters less for a lane than for a front drive.

Screened costs more and looks better

Yard-screened millings — uniform, no oversize chunks — sit at the top of the price range and lay far more evenly. For anything you look at daily, the extra few dollars a ton is the difference between a surface and a spread.

The roller is the real budget line

A 1-ton walk-behind vibratory roller rents for $150–$250 a day, a ride-on for $400–$600. On any driveway-sized job this is the item that determines whether the material performs. Skipping it saves a day’s rent and costs the surface.

Common mistakes

Laying it cold

Millings spread in November stay loose gravel until spring. The bitumen needs heat to soften and rebind. Schedule the job for the warmest weeks you can — mid-summer laying is a different material from late-autumn laying.

Skipping the roller

Spread with a rake and driven on casually, millings scatter and rut like any loose stone. The locking action comes from compaction under weight, applied deliberately.

Millings over soft ground

Like every surface course, they need a base. Four inches of millings over mud is four inches of millings in the mud by spring. Compacted crusher run underneath where the subgrade is weak.

Expecting a finished asphalt look

The colour is patchy, the texture coarse, and the edges never crisp. That is the material being what it is. Where appearance is the priority, price hot mix instead rather than being disappointed by a bargain.
