How the calculation works

A roof is always larger than the ground it covers. How much larger depends entirely on the pitch, and that single factor is the reason roofing estimates go wrong more often than any other trade calculation.

Measure the footprint, apply the pitch multiplier, divide by 100 for squares. Skip the multiplier on a 6/12 roof and you are 11.8% short — roughly three bundles on an average house, discovered on the last afternoon of the job.

Where the multiplier comes from

A roof slope is the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose base is 12 inches of run and whose height is the rise. Pythagoras gives √(rise² + 12²), and dividing by the 12 inches of run converts it to a ratio. For a 6/12 roof that is √(36 + 144) ÷ 12 = 1.118 — the roof is 11.8% larger than its footprint.

Why roofing is measured in squares

One square is 100 square feet of roof surface. It is the unit the entire trade quotes in — materials, labour, tear-off and disposal are all priced per square. Thinking in squares rather than square feet makes every quote directly comparable.

Three bundles to a square

Standard three-tab and architectural shingles are packaged so three bundles cover one square. Heavier designer and impact-rated shingles sometimes take four, so check the wrapper — it is printed on every bundle.

What waste actually covers

Starter courses along the eaves, ridge caps, and the offcuts from every hip and valley. A simple gable roof wastes about 10%; a roof with several valleys, dormers and a complicated ridge line can reach 15% or more, because every cut leaves a piece too small to use.

What it costs

Shingles themselves are a modest share of a roofing bill. Labour, tear-off and disposal usually add up to more than the material, which is why comparing quotes on shingle brand alone tells you very little.

Materials

Three-tab shingles run roughly $100–$150 per square in material, architectural $150–$250. Underlayment, ice and water shield at the eaves, drip edge, ridge vent and starter strip add another $50–$100 per square that is easy to forget when pricing.

Labour

Typically $200–$400 per square for asphalt shingles. Steep pitches over 8/12, second and third storeys, and roofs with restricted access all push this up because of staging and safety requirements.

Tear-off and disposal

$100–$150 per square per layer. Two existing layers doubles it, and it frequently uncovers decking that needs replacing at $70–$120 per sheet — the single most common reason a roofing job comes in over quote.

What a full replacement looks like

A 15 square roof in architectural shingles with one layer of tear-off runs roughly $8,000–$13,000 installed in 2026. The same roof in three-tab is $6,000–$9,000; in standing seam metal, $14,000–$25,000.

Common mistakes

Ordering to the footprint

The defining roofing error. A 6/12 roof is 11.8% bigger than the ground it covers; a 12/12 is 41.4% bigger. Order to the footprint and you will be short by roughly that much, and you will find out on the last day.

Measuring pitch by eye

People consistently guess steep roofs shallower than they are. Measure it: hold a level out from the roof surface, mark 12 inches along it, and measure straight down to the roof. That drop is the rise.

Using one waste figure for every roof

Ten percent suits a plain gable. A roof with four valleys and two dormers wastes far more, because every valley cut produces an offcut too small to reuse. Under-allowing on a complex roof is the second most common shortfall.

Forgetting the accessories

Starter strip, ridge cap, underlayment, ice and water shield, drip edge and ventilation are all separate line items. Shingles alone are perhaps 60% of the material cost.

Shingling a low slope

Below 2/12 asphalt shingles are not rated and most manufacturers void the warranty. Between 2/12 and 4/12 they work but need a doubled underlayment. Below 2/12 the roof needs a membrane system instead.

How do I calculate roof area?

Measure the building footprint, then multiply by the pitch multiplier. For a 6/12 pitch that is 1.1180. A 40 × 30 ft footprint at 6/12 gives 1,200 × 1.1180 = 1,342 square feet of roof.

What is a roofing square?

How many bundles of shingles do I need?

Do I measure the roof or the ground?

The ground — the building footprint. The calculator applies the pitch multiplier to convert it. Measuring the roof surface directly is dangerous and rarely more accurate.

How do I find my roof pitch without going on the roof?

From inside the loft, hold a level horizontally against a rafter, mark 12 inches along it, then measure vertically from that mark to the rafter. That measurement is the rise.

How many squares is an average house roof?

A 1,200 ft² footprint at 6/12 is about 14.8 squares including 10% waste. Most single-family homes fall between 15 and 30 squares.
