The step that catches people out is pitch — a roof is always larger than the ground it covers, and the steeper it is, the larger. How they help
They apply the pitch multiplier
Actual roof area is footprint × √(rise² + 144) ÷ 12. A 4/12 pitch multiplies by 1.054, a 6/12 by 1.118, a 12/12 by 1.414. Skip this and a steep roof is under-ordered by as much as 40%.
They convert to squares and bundles
Roofing is sold by the square — 100 square feet, normally three bundles. Suppliers, estimates and labour rates are all quoted in squares, so it is the unit the whole trade speaks in.
They allow for cuts and waste
Hips, valleys, ridges and starter courses all consume material beyond the plane area. A simple gable roof needs around 10% waste; a complex roof with multiple valleys can need 15% or more.
They separate tear-off from install
Removing the old roof and disposing of it is a distinct cost, and it doubles if there are two layers up there. Quotes that bundle it invisibly are hard to compare — costing it separately makes them comparable.

How do I calculate roof area?
Measure the building footprint, then multiply by the pitch multiplier for your roof slope. For a 6/12 pitch that is 1.118. A 40 × 30 ft footprint at 6/12 gives 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,342 square feet of roof.
What is a roofing square?
100 square feet of roof surface, normally covered by three bundles of shingles. Materials, labour and quotes are all priced per square, so it is the unit worth thinking in.
How many bundles of shingles do I need?
Three per square for standard architectural shingles. Divide your roof area by 100 to get squares, multiply by three, then add 10–15% for waste depending on how many hips and valleys the roof has.
What is the pitch multiplier?
The factor converting footprint to actual sloped area: √(rise² + 144) ÷ 12, where rise is the inches of rise per 12 inches of run. 4/12 is 1.054, 6/12 is 1.118, 8/12 is 1.202, 12/12 is 1.414.
How long does an asphalt shingle roof last?
Three-tab shingles run 15–20 years, architectural 25–30, and impact-resistant grades 30–40. Ventilation, climate and installation quality move those numbers more than the shingle grade does.
How much does a new roof cost?
Asphalt shingles typically run $350–$700 per square installed in the US, so a 24 square roof lands around $8,400–$16,800. Tear-off, roof complexity, number of storeys and regional labour rates all move that materially.
